Boswell Votes to Restore Teacher Jobs, Keep Iowa's Children Healthy

August 10, 2010 - 12:00pm

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Leonard Boswell voted for and the House passed H.R. 1586, the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act, to keep Iowa teachers in the classroom and Iowa’s low-income children healthy.

“Iowa’s children must be cared for – mind and body – even in the toughest of economic times,” Boswell said. “This legislation closes tax loopholes that encourage American companies to ship jobs overseas and uses that money to keep at least 1,500 educators in Iowa schools and 400,000 Iowa families healthy. As Iowa school children and their families prepare to start the upcoming school year, I will continue to fight for legislation that makes a child’s education and well-being a top priority.”

H.R. 1586 will save 161,000 education jobs and respond to the request of 42 state governors, 26 Democrats and 16 Republicans, who lobbied Congress for assistance meeting their Medicaid program needs. This legislation is more than fully paid for and will reduce the deficit by $1.4 billion over the next 10 years by closing corporate tax loopholes that encourage companies to move American jobs overseas.

“As a father and grandfather, I am casting my vote in support of the health and future of Iowa’s children, and for the American people, whose jobs are stolen by corporations cheating the system and exporting American jobs overseas,” Boswell said.
